Door-to-Door Sales Tips: What to Expect and Do in Your First Week
Practical door-to-door sales tips for beginners: what the first week looks like, how to approach the door, what to say, and how to handle no.
Short answer: your first week is about reps, not results. Learn the script word for word, knock as many doors as you can, ask your manager and top reps for feedback every day, and track doors, conversations and sales so you can see yourself improving. Most beginners make their first sale after many conversations, not in the first hour, and the ones who keep knocking through a slow start are the ones who stay.
What the week usually looks like
- Training. The product, the script, the tablet or app, and the rules for the territory.
- Ride-alongs. You shadow an experienced rep, then knock while they watch.
- Your own doors. Full days in your own area with a check-in at night.
At the door
- Knock, then step back so you are not crowding the doorway.
- Smile and say who you are and why you are there in the first sentence.
- Talk about the homeowner, not the product: their bill, their roof, their bugs, their internet.
- Ask questions and listen to the answers. The question you ask next should come from what they said.
- Wear your company ID and carry your permit where the town requires one (see permits and laws).
- Skip homes posted with No Soliciting signs.
Handling no
Most doors are a no. Say thank you, walk to the next one, and do not carry the last door into the next conversation. A short, polite exit also keeps the door open for a teammate later.
Track three numbers
- Doors knocked. The only number fully in your control.
- Conversations. Someone opened and listened.
- Sales (or set appointments).
Watching conversations per door and sales per conversation tells you whether to work on your opener or your close.
Take care of yourself
- Water, sunscreen and comfortable shoes. You will walk miles.
- Eat a real lunch. The late afternoon and early evening are often the best hours, and you need energy for them.
- Keep a mileage log and set aside taxes from your first check if you are a 1099 contractor (see how pay works).
Ask for coaching every day
Ask the top rep on your team what they said at the door today. Ask your manager to watch one pitch and tell you one thing to fix. New reps who ask improve fastest.
Not on a team yet? Apply once and pick the industries you want to try.
Questions
How many doors do door-to-door reps knock a day?
Commonly 100 or more in a full day, depending on the industry and neighborhood. What matters more is how many conversations you get and how you use them.
What should I say when someone opens the door?
Who you are and why you are there in the first sentence, then a question about them: their bill, their home, their service. Your company will give you a script; learn it word for word first.
How long until my first door-to-door sale?
It varies. Many beginners need a few days of full knocking. Track your doors and conversations so a slow start does not feel like no progress.
