Door-to-door solar reps knock residential neighborhoods, qualify homeowners on their electric bill and roof, and either set appointments for a closer or close the deal themselves. It is the highest-earning door-to-door industry and the most competitive one to get into.
What a day looks like
- Knock 100-200 doors a day in a territory the company assigns.
- Qualify on the electric bill, roof condition, home ownership and credit.
- Set an appointment for a closer, or sit the appointment yourself once you are trained.
- Follow up on pending deals and keep the pipeline moving through install.
How solar reps get paid
Almost always commission. Setters earn a flat fee per sat appointment plus a bonus when the deal installs. Closers earn a percentage of the system price or a per-kilowatt rate. Pay is usually released at install, which can be weeks after the sale, so a weekly draw or advance matters when you compare offers.

Solar sales questions
Do I need experience to sell solar door to door?
No. Most solar companies hire setters with no experience and train them for the first two weeks. Closing roles usually require either solar experience or a strong record in another door-to-door industry.
How are door-to-door solar reps paid?
Commission. Setters earn per sat appointment and a bonus per install; closers earn a percentage of the deal or a per-kilowatt rate. Most pay is released when the system installs.
Is solar the best door-to-door industry?
It has the highest ceiling. It also has the longest sales cycle and the most cancellations. Reps who want faster, more predictable pay often start in pest control, fiber or security and move to solar later.
