How to Get a Door-to-Door Sales Job
How to get hired in door-to-door sales with no experience: what companies look for, how to apply, the interview, and picking an industry.
Short answer: you do not need experience, a degree or a resume to get a door-to-door sales job. You need to be able to show up every day, hold a conversation with a stranger, and handle hearing no. Companies hire on attitude and availability, then train the rest. The fastest way in is to apply once through a recruiter that works with many companies, pick your industry, and interview with the ones hiring in your market.
What door-to-door companies actually look for
- Availability. Full-time reps work six days a week in season. Summer programs want you for the whole summer. Be honest about your dates.
- Coachability. Every company has a script and a system. They want someone who will run it before trying to improve it.
- Resilience. You will knock 100 or more doors to get a handful of conversations. Managers ask about this in every interview.
- Transportation. A car and a valid license open most roles. Some summer programs bus the team, but a car still helps.
- Background. Home security and some solar roles require a background check and a state license. A clean record widens your options.
Experience that counts even if it is not sales
Restaurant serving, retail, athletics, missions, military service, fundraising, canvassing for a campaign, and any job where you talked to the public all count. Say so on your application. Reps who have done any of these ramp faster, and companies know it.
How to apply
- Apply once. Use the Knock Door to Door application. It takes about five minutes and covers every industry.
- Pick your industries. Not sure? Read which door-to-door industry is best for you. Picking two or three gets you more interviews.
- Get ranked and matched. We score your application and send it to companies hiring in your area and in markets you would relocate to.
- Interview. Usually a phone screen, then a video or in-person interview with a manager. Some companies have you ride along for a day.
- Start. Start dates depend on the company and the season. Year-round roles can move fast; summer programs fill months ahead.
What the interview is like
Expect questions like: Why door-to-door? What do you do when someone slams the door? Can you work six days a week? Where do you want to be in a year? Managers are checking whether you will quit in week two. Show that you understand the job is hard and you want it anyway.
Red flags when you are evaluating a company
- No clear answer on when and how you get paid.
- Charging you for training, leads or equipment.
- No one can tell you what a mid-level rep on the team earned last year.
- Housing that is promised but not in writing (for summer programs).
We ask every company these questions before we introduce you to it. The full checklist is in how to vet a door-to-door sales company.
Questions
Can I get a door-to-door sales job with no experience?
Yes. Most door-to-door companies hire with no experience and train you in the first one to two weeks. Pest control, home security, fiber internet and canvassing roles are the most common entry points.
Do I need a resume for door-to-door sales?
No. Our application replaces the resume. Companies care about availability, attitude and any experience talking to the public, which the application captures directly.
How long does it take to get hired?
It depends on the company and the season. Year-round roles can move within days of an interview; summer programs recruit months before the season starts.
