Types of door-to-door sales jobs: every industry, and what is not door-to-door

Short answer: door-to-door sales is selling a product or service in person at the customer's home. It comes in two forms: selling at the door (fiber, pest control, home security, retail energy) and canvassing to book an in-home appointment (solar, roofing, windows, HVAC). Selling to businesses, and canvassing for donations or votes, use similar skills but are different jobs. This page lists 53 categories and says which is which.

How to choose among them

Start with how you want to be paid and how long you can wait for it. Short sales such as fiber and pest control pay sooner; long sales such as solar and roofing pay more per sale and later. The comparisons put pairs of industries side by side, and which door-to-door sales industry is best covers them all at once.

Questions

What are the main types of door-to-door sales?

There are two. In the first, the rep sells at the door and the sale closes there or within a day or two: fiber internet, pest control, home security, retail energy and lawn care work this way. In the second, the rep canvasses to book an appointment and a closer sells in the home: solar, roofing, windows, HVAC, gutters and most home improvement work this way.

Is canvassing the same as door-to-door sales?

Not always. Sales canvassing books appointments for a product and is part of door-to-door sales. Fundraising, political and outreach canvassing asks for donations, votes or signatures, is usually paid by the hour, and is treated differently by many city ordinances.

Is business-to-business field sales door-to-door sales?

It uses the same skill, walking in unannounced and starting a conversation, but the customer is a business. Merchant services, payroll and business internet are sold this way. Pay plans, hours and the rules differ, so this site treats it as a separate kind of work.
