What is storm chasing in roofing sales?

Storm chasing: Storm chasing is following hail and wind storms to the neighborhoods they damaged and offering roof inspections door to door, with repairs paid through the homeowner's insurance claim.

After a major storm, roofing companies send sales teams into the affected area, sometimes from other states. Reps inspect roofs for damage, help the homeowner start a claim and sign them to have the company do the work.

The term has a bad reputation because some crews do poor work and leave town. Storm work itself is a legitimate and large part of the roofing industry. What separates the two is licensing in the state, a local presence or warranty that outlasts the storm, and honest damage reports.

Ask before you sign
