Fiber sales vs. home security sales: the contract, the install and the pay
Short answer: Both are one-visit sales with an install soon after. Fiber is the lighter sale: an internet subscription the household already buys from someone, usually with no long contract, sold year-round near home. Home security is a heavier sale: a monitoring agreement that runs for a fixed term, installed the same day, sold mostly in summer programs, and in some states only by a licensed or registered rep. Fiber suits reps who want simple, steady volume. Security suits reps who want a bigger sale and a tight team structure.
| Fiber sales | Home security sales | |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer signs | An order for internet service, often month to month | A monitoring agreement for a fixed term, plus equipment |
| Who can buy | Any household at an address the new network reaches, renters included | Mostly homeowners; renters need a system they can take with them and often the landlord's permission |
| The conversation | Speed, price and the install date. Minutes at the door | A walk through the home's entry points, the equipment and the monthly rate. Longer, and usually inside |
| Install | Scheduled for a later day; you follow up until it happens | Often the same day by a technician working the neighborhood with the team |
| When commission releases | When the install is completed | When the account is installed and activated; part may wait to see that the customer keeps paying |
| What moves your pay | How many orders install | The monthly monitoring rate, equipment sold and the customer's credit |
| License for the rep | None for the product. City solicitor permits apply | Some states license or register alarm salespeople (California and Utah do; Texas stopped in 2019), on top of city permits |
| Background check | Depends on the company and the city permit | Common, and required where the state licenses the rep |
| Season and travel | Year-round; local teams, plus short blitzes when a new area opens | Summer programs in another market, plus year-round teams in some areas |
| Why deals fall through | Missed installs and early cancellations | Credit declines, cancellations inside the three-day window, and accounts that stop paying |
Choose fiber sales if
- You want to work near home through the year
- You prefer a short, low-pressure pitch on a product people already use
- You want to start without waiting on a state license
- You like a high number of conversations per day
Choose home security sales if
- You want a summer program with housing and a team around you
- You are comfortable asking for a multi-year commitment and explaining it honestly
- You can pass a background check
- You want training built around a product demonstration
Moving between the two
The door skills are the same, and both industries pay on installed accounts, so reps cross over easily. Security reps who move to fiber notice the pace: more doors, shorter talks, and follow-up on installs that are days away. Fiber reps who move to security have to learn the agreement well enough to explain the term, the monthly rate and the cancellation rules without hedging.
Timing is the practical point. Security programs recruit in winter and spring for a summer start, and a state license can take weeks. Fiber teams bring reps on through the year.

Questions
Is home security harder to sell than fiber internet?
It asks more of the customer: a fixed-term agreement, a monthly rate and often a credit check. That makes each sale harder than a fiber order. Security programs answer that with more training and a technician who installs the same day, so a decision made at the door is completed before it cools.
Do I need a license to sell fiber internet door to door?
There is no state license for selling internet service. You may need a city solicitor permit, which the company usually arranges. Selling alarm systems is different: some states, California and Utah among them, license or register the individual salesperson.
Can I sell fiber in the off-season and security in the summer?
Yes, and some reps do exactly that. Check your rep agreements first: some restrict working for another sales company during or after the season, and unpaid back-end pay can depend on finishing the program.
