What is a setter in door-to-door sales?

Setter: A setter knocks doors to book appointments instead of closing sales. The setter finds interested homeowners, qualifies them and schedules a visit for a closer, who presents and signs the deal.

Setting is the most common entry role in solar, windows, HVAC and water treatment, where the sale takes a longer presentation than a doorstep allows. A setter's job is a short conversation: earn a minute of attention, check that the home qualifies, and set a firm time when all decision-makers will be home.

Setters are paid per appointment that takes place, per sale that results, or a base plus bonuses. The role teaches the hardest part of the job, which is the door, and it is the usual path to becoming a closer.

Ask before you sign

Am I paid when the appointment is set, when it happens, or when it sells?
